Frequently Asked Questions for Current Students

Q:  What graduate program forms are required?
A:  A series of forms are used to establish a plan of study, identify an advisor and advisory committee, and to report the results of various examinations.   These forms and instructions can be found on-line at:  http://grad.mst.edu/currentstudents/gradforms.html.

Q:  When should my plan of study be done?
A: Each graduate student must complete and submit a plan of study.  M.S. students must submit a Graduate Form 1 which should be turned in by the 6th week of the semester in which you complete the 15th credit hour.  Ph.D. candidates must submit Graduate Form 5, Ph.D. advisory committee and plan of study which should be completed no later than 6 weeks into the fifth semester.

Q:  Can I transfer credit from another university?
A:  A maximum 9 credit hours of coursework may be transferred from another university.  Such credits must have been registered as graduate courses when they were taken.  Students must have earned a grade of B or better in the courses to be transferred.  The transfer hours must be approved by the advisor and advisory committee on the plan of study.

Q:  Does the campus have guidelines for writing a thesis or dissertations?
A:  The campus has thesis/dissertation specifications and a template.   These are found at: http://grad.mst.edu/currentstudents/ThesesDissertations.html

Q:  Where can I find final semester deadlines?
A:  Deadlines are published on-line for students expecting to graduate in a given semester.  The deadlines can be found at:  http://grad.mst.edu/currentstudents/gradforms.html

Q:  I have a master’s degree from another university.  Is earning a 2nd master’s degree allowed at S&T?
A:  It may be allowed with approval from your advisors and department chair.

Q:  What happens if I can’t defend and turn in the Library copy of my thesis/dissertation by the deadline?
A:  You will not graduate during the current semester (the semester in which you missed the deadline).  You will need to reapply to be a candidate for graduation for the
following semester.

Q:  If I don’t meet the deadline for current semester graduation, will I need to register for the next semester?
A:  The answer varies depending on when you complete your defense and turn in your final (or Library copy) thesis/dissertation.  You must be enrolled at the time you defend.  If you defend and the Library copy of your thesis/dissertation is accepted in the Office of Graduate Studies before the final day of the semester, you will not need to enroll.  If you defend during the intersession period, you will need to enroll in 493, Oral Examination.  (In this instance, intersession is defined as the interval of time between the closing of one academic session and one week prior to the first day of classes in the following academic session.)  Following an intersession defense, the Library copy of the thesis/dissertation must be accepted in the Office of Graduate Studies before the next semester begins.   If you do not turn in your final thesis/dissertation copy before the next semester begins (or if it does not meet formatting requirements), you will be allowed to enroll in 1 credit hour of 490 for the first 4 weeks of a fall or spring semester or the first 2 weeks of a summer session, specifically to complete the thesis/dissertation.   If, after that time period has passed, you have not completed, you will be required to be enrolled full time.
